According to an ESPN survey, tennis is the seventh hardest sport in the world to play. It is difficult for professionals to win titles, much less a Grand Slam, due to the rules of the tournaments. The player cannot return to the tournament after one defeat. More than 1,000 professionals compete on the WTA alone in an attempt to win at least one major in their career. However, three illustrious women earned more than twenty majors. The only women with more than 20 major titles in the Open Era, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf, are in the running for the title of G.O.A.T., despite Margaret Court being without a doubt the greatest of her era.
It was their fathers who first introduced Serena and Graf to the game. While Peter coached the German to become a professional at the age of just 13, Richard guided the American to become a professional at the age of 14. The rest is history; in the tennis world, October 1, 1999, is a “Golden” date. Additionally, the year was the ideal representation of the proverb “the end is the beginning.”
