News: Pete Rose texted a Kentucky player about his incredible slip.

At a pregame ceremony for the unveiling of Pete Rose’s bronze statue outside the stadium before the MLB National League game between the Cincinnati Reds and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Great American Ball Park in downtown Cincinnati on Saturday, June 17, 2017, an emotional Pete Rose, the hall of famer for the Cincinnati Reds, adjusts his cap as he takes the microphone.Pete RosePete Rose himself acknowledged a Kentucky player who plunged into a Pete Rose-like slide during the College World Series. After a third strike was dropped, Nolan McCarthy executed a brilliant play that caught the Beaver defense off guard during the Wildcats’ Super Regional match versus Oregon State. McCarthy started the play from second base with the game tied in the seventh inning, and he continued when the pitcher for Oregon State chose not to protect home plate. McCarthy raced into a Superman-style slide to beat the catcher to the plate, and he eventually scored what turned out to be the winning run.

While watching the play, one of Rose’s former teammates, Doug Flynn, of Kentucky, who won two championships with Rose while he was a member of the Cincinnati Reds, reached out to Rose, sending him a photo of the slide. Flynn then forwarded Rose a message.

“I texted Pete Rose after you did your Pete Rose slide the other night.'” Flynn wrote back to McCarthy, “Tell him to keep having fun. However, the only way to have fun is to win. Everyone’s in a better mood when you win. You can’t win every game but you should want to. Field, hit, be a good baserunner. Don’t care who you are. Three-for-10 and you’re having a good day. Play some good defense and have fun. I made 10,000 outs, so don’t worry about it.” McCarthy will never forget that moment, and his coaches will probably be grateful that Rose kept it lighthearted. McCarthy and the Wildcats eventually advanced to Omaha, where they will play NC State.
