On Sunday, a Liverpool player, who was abroad on international duty, had a “Xabi Alonso moment” and then compared himself to Kylian Mbappé, the French superstar.
Dominik Szoboszlai has been utilised in a variety of different midfield positions since joining Liverpool in the summer. Although he usually plays as the right-sided number eight, we’ve also seen him occasionally appear on the left or even in defensive midfield.
Szoboszlai, though, played a part in a friendly match between Hungary and Czechia on Sunday in Budapest that would have been completely unfamiliar to Jürgen Klopp. In his 3-4-2-1 formation, manager Marco Rossi used him as a left inside forward, behind Barnabas Varga and alongside Rolland Sallai.
On paper, that may have been his job, but in practice, he was allowed free rein to wander about the field, and he took advantage of it to turn in an all-around masterclass.
