To free up salary space, teams all across the league are cutting players ahead of free agency. The front office of the Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision to let go of Mason Cole, the team’s former starting center, on Friday.
According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, the Steelers will save about $5 million by releasing Cole. Pittsburgh is now free to use the funds anyway they see fit.
“Steelers announce that C Mason Cole has been released, freeing up slightly less than $5 million in cap space.”
Over the previous few seasons, Pittsburgh’s offensive line hasn’t been the best. It follows that the franchise’s decision to find new players makes sense. particularly if the Steelers are able to save over $5 million by moving.
Mason Cole, who is expected to pique interest throughout the league, is set to reach free agency. His sporting background will assist him in settling in. It’s uncertain, though, if he’ll start or serve as a backup next season.
Regarding the Steelers, perhaps the front management has ideas about strengthening the offensive line. Pittsburgh won’t be far from regaining its status as a serious contender. It should be as simple as upgrading the quarterback and fixing the offensive line.
