It has been revealed that Manchester City requested a move from Chelsea in secret earlier this year.
Prior to the transfer window’s closure on September 1st, both clubs were particularly active, with Chelsea continuing to splurge after going on quite the spending binge in their first two windows under owner Todd Boehly.
But it has come to light that City made a surprise offer to the Blues regarding left-back Marc Cucurella during the January transfer window.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, City offered the Spaniard they were interested in in the summer a loan with a purchase option.
Brighton’s £62 million asking price ultimately turned City off, and they abandoned a potential acquisition.
The Premier League winners reportedly sought to persuade Chelsea to unload Oleksandr Zinchenko in the midst of the season but were unable because they lacked a left-back replacement.
Cucurella had a difficult first season at Chelsea, and following the news that Luke Shaw’s injury was more serious than initially thought, it appeared as though he may be headed to Manchester United on loan.
The ex-Getafe player, however, represented Chelsea against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup, therefore he is unable to compete for United.
That discouraged the Red Devils, who on deadline day instead signed Spurs left-back Sergio Reguilon for the season.
Cucurella did, however, have a lot of offers on the table in the summer, according to Romano. Atletico Madrid, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, as well as Chelsea’s west London rivals RB Leipzig and Fulham, who made a last-minute attempt that finally failed, were all interested in a loan of the player from Spain.

Cucurella has chosen to remain at Chelsea, where he has played 34 times, since he was solely interested in joining United.
