ST. LOUIS — Boston University (24-13-2) and Western Michigan (33-7-1) have only faced off four times in men’s hockey history, but Broncos coach Pat Ferschweiler feels familiar with what the Terriers will bring in Saturday’s NCAA championship game.
Ferschweiler, who spent four years as a Detroit Red Wings assistant (2015-19), compared BU’s playing style to that of the NHL’s Boston Bruins—a system he believes head coach Jay Pandolfo has carried over from his time as a Bruins assistant.
“I’ve pre-scouted BU for years—they were called the Boston Bruins, and their style mirrors what Boston does,” Ferschweiler said. “Coach Pandolfo has brought that approach to college hockey. It’s not as common at this level, but the similarities are clear.”
Despite recognizing BU’s tactics, Ferschweiler emphasized that Western Michigan won’t adjust its own game plan. “We understand what they’re trying to do, but our focus remains on playing our style,” he said. “We’ll stick to our strengths without changing a thing.”
