Success is not as important to me as originality.”
2018 saw the release of the third remake of A Star Is Born, which was a massive box office blockbuster, nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won Best Original Song. Barbra Streisand, who starred in the 1976 second remake of A Star Is Born, likewise gave it high accolades upon its premiere. (The earlier iterations made their debuts in 1937 and 1954.) However, Streisand expressed dissatisfaction with the film’s outcome in a recent post, offering further insights into her thoughts on the most recent picture, which stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga.
Speaking to Australia’s The Sunday Project, Streisand expressed her expectation that the new film would feature more “originality” and a more varied cast in addition to showcasing a different kind of music. She had previously brought up this subject while praising other parts of the film, but in this latest interview, she went into more detail. See what Streisand found objectionable about the popular remake by reading on.
Starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, the 1937 classic A Star Is Born tells the story of an aspiring actor who becomes successful with the assistance of a disgraced movie star. The 1954 adaptation, which is a musical about an aspiring singer and stars Judy Garland and James Mason, has a similar storyline.
According to Streisand, she wanted to make sure that everything were different for the 1976 film. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my god, how am I going to do this?’ when I performed A Star Is Born because I thought Judy Garland was so amazing in it. I must make the necessary changes. “We’ll alter the plot a little bit—I’ll become a guitarist and [co-star] Kris Kristofferson is already a singer-songwriter,” she said to The Sunday Project.
Naturally, the story of A Star Is Born would not change, but Streisand stated in a recent interview that she believed the music would, just as it did in her own rendition. Additionally, she believed that non-white leads will appear in the fourth iteration for the first time.
“At first, when I heard it was going to be done again, it was supposed to be Will Smith and Beyoncé,” Streisand said. And it struck me as intriguing. Make it truly unique once more by using new music and integrating actors. I was shocked to see how similar that idea was to the version I produced in 1976, as I had always believed it was a terrific one.
