Jason Meara made a commanding start to the 2025 Ulster Open Motocross Championship, claiming a treble victory at the opening round held at St. John’s Point. Riding his 350cc GasGas machine, Meara dominated all three races, showcasing his skill and determination to secure the overall win. His flawless performance set the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
The day began with intense competition as Glenn McCormick, riding for Chambers KTM, posted the fastest time in practice. However, it was Meara who emerged victorious in race one despite a slow start. Ivan Kerr initially grabbed the hole-shot, with Martin Barr briefly taking the lead before being overtaken by McCormick and eventually Meara. By lap six, Meara surged to the front and maintained his lead to claim his first win of the day.
Race two saw McCormick take an early lead, but mechanical issues derailed his efforts when a dislodged chain dropped him to seventh place. Stuart Edmonds capitalized on this opportunity, leading for three laps before Meara caught up and passed him. Meara built a comfortable margin of over four seconds by the finish line, with Barr and McCormick rounding out the top four.
The final race of the day featured tight competition among the top riders, including Edmonds, McCormick, Barr, and Meara. Despite another slow start, Meara methodically worked his way through the pack. By lap six, he took control of the race and secured his third win with nearly a five-second advantage over McCormick.
Reflecting on his performance, Meara expressed satisfaction with his results: “Three wins from three starts—I couldn’t ask for much more. My starts weren’t great, but I stayed calm and knew I had the pace to catch up.” His calculated approach paid off as he dominated the event despite challenging starts.
McCormick also had a strong showing, finishing second overall despite competing on a less powerful 250cc KTM against 450cc machines. “It’s been a good confidence boost,” he said. Meanwhile, Barr rounded out the podium in third place despite admitting he wasn’t at his best following a recent crash.
The event also highlighted other standout performances across various classes. Alex Jellie claimed victory in the MX2 Clubman category, while David Anderson emerged as the overall winner in the semi-expert class.
Meara’s treble victory not only solidifies his position as a title contender but also sets an exciting precedent for the rest of the championship season. Fans can look forward to more thrilling battles as riders like McCormick and Barr aim to challenge Meara’s dominance in upcoming rounds.
