Wednesday’s match between Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers will take place at Elland Road with both teams looking to recover from losses over the weekend.
The visitors now find themselves in the bottom three after a four-match winless record, while the hosts plummeted to ninth place in the Championship table after losing away at Sunderland, snapping a six-match league unbeaten streak.
Leeds United is coming off a disappointing loss that has halted their momentum in their quest to return to the Premier League under the new management of Daniel Farke as they prepare for their tenth Championship match of the season on Wednesday.
The Whites had a sluggish start to life in the second tier, but they eventually gained momentum, starting an unbeaten streak before the international break in September, and continuing where they left off after their return, defeating Millwall 3-0 at The Den thanks to a brace from Joel Piroe and a goal from Georginio Rutter, and earning a respectable point from a goalless draw away at high-flying Yorkshire rivals Hull City.
Then, Farke’s team would beat Watford 3-0 at Elland Road to extend their winning streak to six games in impressive fashion. Piroe eventually scored the game’s first goal in the 67th minute, and then Sam Byram and Jaidon Anthony added goals to put them on 13 points after eight games and just outside the top six heading into a challenging trip to fello.
It got worse for the Whites as they went into halftime 3-0 down after two goals from Will Smallbone and two more from Adam Armstrong. Pascal Struijk’s goal in the 58th minute was insufficient to spark a comeback at St Mary’s as Leeds left empty-handed. Their hosts entered the game coming off four straight league losses.
They will be eager to seize this opportunity to immediately get back on track at Elland Road and return to winning ways in order to start another successful run of outcomes on Wednesday.
They play Queens Park Rangers, who have had a terrible start to the Championship season and are looking to avenge a 3-1 loss they suffered themselves last time out.
Under the direction of Gareth Ainsworth, Queens Park Rangers again set out to maintain their second-tier status after ultimately finishing just six points above the relegation zone last season. They had six points after five games going into the international break thanks to significant away wins over Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.
The London team has only managed two more points since returning from the break and has been unable to add to its win total in four attempts. First, they lost 3-1 at home to Sunderland before stealing a point from Swansea City in stoppage time when Lyndon Dykes tied the game at 1-1 at Loftus Road in the 92nd minute.
Then, Ainsworth’s team traveled to Birmingham City and earned a point from a scoreless draw there, before most recently hosting Coventry City on Saturday and leaving empty-handed once more. Kenneth Paal’s injury-time goal sealed the team’s 3-1 loss after Ellis Simms scored a hat trick and Josh Eccles also scored for the guests.
QPR will attempt to capture a significant scalp at Elland Road on Wednesday in an effort to immediately improve their situation at the foot of the table and prevent being cut adrift in the upcoming weeks after finding themselves in the relegation places at this early stage of the season.
