Loredana Berte, an actress and singer who married tennis legend Bjorn Borg in 1989 and 1993, has once again discussed the tennis icon’s struggles with cocaine.
Regarding Borg’s 1989 attempt at suicide, Berte said to Francesca Fagnani on Belve de Rai 2: “I never understood why he did it. Our breakup was partially caused by his cocaine addiction; at one point in our relationship, I couldn’t accept that he preferred cocaine to me.”
When she broke up with the Swedish tennis star in 1992, the woman dubbed the “Sophia Loren of Italian rock” said, “We were staying at a hotel in Palm Beach, he had had an exhibition match.” Upon his return to the hotel, he called and requested two prostitutes. They arrived clad in leather and brandishing whips, and he informed me that our sexual encounters should escalate. I punched him and walked away, refusing to let him back into the home when we got back to Milan. That was the last day of it.”
The hold of cocaine on Borg
In her autobiography “Traslocando,” Berte—who had previously met Borg while on vacation in Ibiza in 1988—explained that Borg had “a monstrous dependence on cocaine.”
Borg spent a lot of time in brothels and was really lost there. After a two-day absence, I threw a sofa, silver plates, and all of his tournament trophies out the window when he finally showed up. I handed him the remaining portion after striking him with racquets and telling him, “I married you because you had to be the father of my children,” before his terrified mother interfered. The mother informed me that Borg would have only produced offspring of pure Swedish blood, and he spluttered in confusion. The 53-year-old musician remembered, “I threw another couple of medals over the balcony and left for good.”
“I should have parted ways with him sooner; I left too late, in 1992. I lost the money in the bank and my feelings for Borg. Because multimillionaires never have money in their wallets, I always paid,” the author wrote in her book.
