On this day in Black history, NBA great Wilt Chamberlain becomes the first to reach the 30,000-point mark.

HOUSTON: On August 21, 1936, Wilton Norman Chamberlain, a basketball player, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.


Chamberlain was a very gifted track and field athlete from a young age. Chamberlain followed his basketball career while attending Overbrook High School. Every season in 1953, Chamberlain scored more than thirty-one points per game.


Chamberlain enrolled at the University of Kansas in 1955 and became a member of the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team. After a year, Chamberlain was added to the varsity squad and averaged over fifty points a contest.

Chamberlain joined the Harlem Globetrotters in 1958. The team plays basketball with a blend of humor, drama, and agility. Chamberlain joined the Philadelphia Warriors in 1959 and averaged almost 37 points per game in his NBA debut. Chamberlain scored over 100 points in a Warriors game against the New York Knicks in 1962.


After being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1965, Chamberlain eventually joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1968. After scoring 30,000 points in 940 games, Chamberlain became the first African American player in NBA history on February 16, 1972.

As a player-coach, Chamberlain joined the San Diego Conquistadors in 1973. Chamberlain made the decision to leave the NBA in 1974. Following his retirement, Chamberlain ventured into real estate and acquired Smalls Paradise, a nightclub located in Harlem.


Chamberlain was recognized as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History and inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1978. Prior to his passing, Chamberlain utilized his position to encourage adults and kids to take an active role in their health throughout the years. Wilt’s Athletic Club is a track and field club that Chamberlain founded and funded in southern California.


Regretfully, Chamberlain passed away at the age of 63 from congestive heart failure in Bel-Air, California, on October 12, 1999.


Chamberlain became recognized as one of the best sportsmen of all time thanks to his athletic gestures and deft maneuvers.
