The roster changes made by the Las Vegas Raiders have happened swiftly. The actions might reveal information about the team’s NFL Draft strategies.
The Las Vegas Raiders could potentially start their postseason run next season with the adjustments they made this offseason. The Raiders have begun filling in the holes on their roster after just missing out on the postseason this year. The Raiders’ strategy for the NFL Draft this year may be revealed by their current actions.
With the acquisition of defensive tackle Christian Wilkins to a four-year contract, the Raiders made a big splash in free agency and formally strengthened their defensive line for the upcoming year. A couple less spectacular additions were also made by Las Vegas, including as the return of starting center Andre James and running back Ameer Abdullah. Although the trades went unnoticed by the league, they were both noteworthy for different reasons.
With Wilkins added, the Raiders’ defensive line is as strong as it gets, especially with Maxx Crosby, Malcolm Koonce, and Tyree Wilson already on the team. It’s unlikely that the Raiders will select a defensive lineman with their first-round draft choice. The Raiders are more likely to use free agency to bolster their offensive line after signing James. It is also unlikely that they will use any of their premium selections on the offensive line.
The Raiders acquired experienced quarterback Gardner Minshew, presumably indicating that Telesco and the Raiders could not afford to move up to choose one of the best quarterbacks available. The decision to sign Gardner might also indicate the team’s faith in Aidan O’Connell, the starting quarterback right now.
