Shaquille O’Neal said that Luka Doncic is the second-best player in Mavericks history.

The one thing that keeps Luka Doncic from being the greatest Mavericks player of all time is revealed by Shaq.

Luka Doncic has established himself as one of the greatest players in Mavericks history in just five seasons, and it’s been incredible to watch. If it weren’t for Dirk Nowitzki, Shaquille O’Neal might already be regarded as the greatest Maverick of all time.

“Just because of the championship, he’s currently the second-best player in Dallas Mavericks history,” O’Neal remarked. “You could place him in that conversation with Dirk if he wins one now. He is still in Dallas and hasn’t made it over here yet. Although he plays well, he is located in Dallas.

Luka Doncic is statistically progressing at a rate that has never been seen before, and his first five years of play have shown enough for many to believe that he will be the next big thing in the NBA. His averages of 33.9 points, 9.8 assists, and 9.1 rebounds per game on 48% shooting have propelled him to the second spot on the MVP ladder just this season.

Luka has been excellent, but despite his success, he has yet to win an NBA championship. When they fell to the Warriors in five games in the 2022 Western Conference Finals, Doncic went as far as he has ever gone.

Not only did Dirk Nowitzki win a championship with the Mavericks, but he also triumphed over LeBron James and one of the greatest teams ever constructed in a remarkable way. That year, Dirk was a hero in the postseason, nearly pulling off the worst series LeBron had ever had in his career.

Until someone manages to return the Larry O’Brien trophy to Texas, Dirk is perhaps the greatest player to have ever played for the team because of the championship and his 20 years of history in Dallas. Even if Luka and the Mavericks have a difficult season ahead of them, as long as their two stars remain healthy, nobody can write them off.
