Steelers Named Landing Place for 49ers Star

The Pittsburgh Steelers might make an impact on the defensive line.

Pittsburgh — The Pittsburgh Steelers could make another splash in free agency by adding a former first-round choice to bolster their defensive line.

Mark Kaboly of The Athletic broke down all of the prospective free agent targets the Steelers may sign this offseason, including San Francisco 49ers defensive end Chase Young in his “Logical Fits” category.

“Mike Tomlin made a fuss over Young during a game in 2020, so that brings him into play,” Kaboly writes in his piece. “With Watt and Highsmith on the roster, there may not be a clear match for Young, but he’s young, skilled, and eager to prove himself after a few inconsistent seasons. If his market turns out to be a one-year contract worth little more than $10 million, as Spotrac predicts, he’s undoubtedly in the mix for the Steelers, who could also use him on the inside at times.”

The Steelers were reportedly looking for Young near the trade deadline before the 49ers got him. As a free agent, they can now sign him without giving up a draft pick.

This past season, Young had 7.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss. While he’s never tallied double-digit sacks, he’s still regarded as a starter with lots of potential.

The Steelers will have to make a choice on Larry Ogunjobi this offseason, as the veteran is projected to face a $13 million cap charge this year. If they decide to release him, they will save approximately $5 million.

Last season, the 29-year-old got three sacks and three tackles for loss, although he missed numerous practices due to ailments.

According to Spotrac, Young’s market value this offseason is a one-year contract at $13 million. The Steelers presently have approximately $13 million in available cap space.
