Larry Bird understood exactly how white athletes, unlike the majority of black players, could become great in the NBA.
The majority of NBA fans believe that Larry Bird broke the myth that white men were weak and delicate. That was undoubtedly the case, but according to Larry Legend, black players are inherently more athletic than white males. But unlike most black players, White athletes might also make an impression in the NBA, Bird noted, but they would have to create something distinctive and controversial.
In 2019, Bird stated to The Undefeated, “I have said over the years that the black man is the better athlete, so to overcome that, you’ve got to be special.”
In fact, Larry Legend did just that.
It’s true that when Bird joined the NBA, he introduced something new to the basketball world. He didn’t dazzle the audience with spectacular dunks as Michael Jordan did, nor did he dazzle them with spectacular plays like Magic Johnson did. Instead, “The Hick from French Lick” prevailed over all of his fiercest opponents thanks to his winning mentality, perseverance, and foundation.
Bird claims that he realized right once that he lacked the agility and athleticism of the majority of black NBA players. He thus put forth a lot of effort to come up with a strategy that would set him apart from the group.
