For the start of the U.S. Open this week, tennis fans from all over the world and New York are descending on Queens. On Tuesday, August 29, QNS/Queens Post spoke with a few of the cheerful spectators outside the famous Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
The world’s top athletes will compete for Grand Slam glory during the two-week event, which takes place from August 28 to September 10. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will be defending his men’s championship title, and Polish star Iga Świątek is aiming for back-to-back US Open victories.
Over 900,000 fans are expected to attend the nation’s premier tennis event, according to NYPD estimates. Of these, approximately half will travel from outside the tri-state area, and the remaining 25% are expected to attend from overseas.
