In the late 1970s and early 1980s, there was a brief but intense rivalry between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. Even though they only faced off 14 times, the two produced some of the most exciting games in sports history.
Among these matches, the 1980 Wimbledon final, which Borg won 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(16), 8-6, is arguably the most famous. The Swede prevailed because of his perseverance, even though McEnroe played some incredible tennis and saved seven championship points. In 2016, Bjorn Borg had a conversation with Pat Cash over the exciting three-hour and fifty-three-minute encounter. The Swede claimed that John McEnroe gained a great deal of respect for his play and demeanor, and that many people were grateful for that championship match.
Expanding on his association with John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg acknowledged that the American holds a great deal of regard for him, even going so far as to explain why.
After the 1980 Wimbledon championship, Borg and John McEnroe faced off six more times. These comprised three Grand Slam finals, the US Open won by the Swede that year, and the Wimbledon and US Open titles won by the American in 1981.
