Match report and free highlights as Chelsea wasted yet another opportunity; Malo Gusto was sent off for a smashing push on Lucas Digne; and Ollie Watkins finished from a tight angle to give Aston Villa back-to-back league wins against Chelsea for the first time in 30 years.
Chelsea’s terrible start to the Premier League season continued as Aston Villa won 1-0 against the 10-man Blues thanks to a fantastic effort from Ollie Watkins.
It is the first time Villa have beaten Chelsea in consecutive league meetings in 30 years, while Mauricio Pochettino’s team has had their poorest start to a top-flight season after six games since 1978/79.
But, as has been the case all season, Chelsea had chances to score, with Emiliano Martinez making a run of excellent stops, but were unable to convert. They have now gone three Premier League games without scoring.
Aston Villa, too, had numerous chances, but only one was converted when Watkins (73) hammered home from a tight angle after a great break with Moussa Diaby.
It happened 15 minutes after Malo Gusto received a straight red card. After a brutal challenge on Lucas Digne, referee Jarred Gillett increased it to a red after consulting the pitchside monitor.
Chelsea is now 14th in the table, with only five points this season. Meanwhile, Aston Villa showed no symptoms of exhaustion following their midweek return to European play, moving up to sixth place, just two points behind the top four.
