Today, on the anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, the Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Fund Scholarship and Mentorship Program announced that it will now accept applications from all high school graduates seeking to continue their education in the fall of 2021. Applicants may apply at wiltfund.org until April 1, 2021. The Wilt Chamberlain Memorial Scholarship and Mentorship Program Recipients are chosen based on a variety of criteria, including academic achievement, financial necessity, and exemplifying Wilt Chamberlain’s characteristics of hard work and the quest of excellence. This includes a strong desire to help people, which is one of Chamberlain’s most significant off-court contributions.
“He was such a giving person, even when we were young,” stated Barbara Lewis, one of Chamberlain’s six siblings. “Wilt was always concerned with helping others who did not have the same opportunities as he did as an athlete. Throughout his life, he dedicated his time, money, and celebrity position to dozens of charity. In the spirit of giving, a significant portion of the program is devoted to mentoring. Scholars are linked with 76ers front office professionals depending on their field of study, interests, and hobbies. 76ers mentors provide regular check-ins to help and encourage students as they transition to college. Mentors provide guidance and support on different college themes such as social life, academic support, time management, and pursuing a profession.
My experience as a WCMF mentor has been great. “I approached this experience with an open mind, but I was very focused on giving back with my time and knowledge,” said 76ers Senior Member Services Account Manager Rob Nicholson. “However, I’ve learnt a lot from my mentee Jalen during the process. We bounce ideas off one another and support each other in our careers by sharing chances that we can both take advantage of. It’s an incredible thrill to see someone you guide develop into a successful young adult. Even once Jalen graduates, our bond will remain.
I am extremely grateful to be a part of this opportunity and organization. All applicants must live in the Philadelphia area, aim to graduate from high school at the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year, and intend to attend an authorized post-secondary institution beginning in the autumn of 2021. They must also have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and show severe unmet financial need.
