Barcelona is making an effort to have a shot at acquiring Manchester City star Erling Haaland.
Although it has long been believed that Real Madrid would be the most likely buyer of Haaland, 90min says that Barca is preparing a counteroffer for the gifted Norwegian striker.
They are now being led by Robert Lewandowski, who is currently sporting the number nine shirt for Barcelona. Haaland, however, is believed to be a serious contender to succeed the seasoned Pole, who just turned 35, in the long run.
Haaland has excelled since moving to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund last summer. He not only assisted the squad in winning the Champions League for the first time during the inaugural season, but he also won the Premier League Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe.
With 36 goals in the league, the 23-year-old broke the Premier League record and now has 52 goals overall in all competitions.
Erling Haaland has only been a Premier League player for a little over a year, but City are already in the process of discussing a new contract that will pay the attacker even more money.
Haaland secured a five-year contract when he relocated to Manchester, however it contained a number of release clauses. One of them was deleted when Pep Guardiola accepted to his contract extension, so there is no option in 2024 that would have allowed him to go for £172 million (€200 million) the next year.
According to rumors, provisions would start to apply in 2025. The player may leave the club for a fixed price, which is reportedly £150 million (€175 million), albeit they do not specify which club. The amount will also get smaller every year.
Haaland would receive the highest basic salary in the Premier League—more than £500,000 per week—making him the highest-paid player in the division—in exchange for the approaching release conditions being lifted. Erling Haaland doesn’t currently have many reasons to do this though.
