Uli Hoeness, honorary president of Bayern Munich, asserted that the club only paid £82 million (€95 million) to acquire Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.
When Kane moved to the Allianz Arena on the eve of the 2023–24 season, he put an end to his 19-year relationship with Spurs.
The striker broke Jimmy Greaves’ record, which had stood for over 50 years, after a 1-0 victory over Manchester City in February, and departed Tottenham as their all-time highest scorer. In 435 games for Spurs, Kane scored 280 goals overall.
Bayern Munich originally expressed interest in Kane in the summer of 2022; his contract in north London was valid until 2024. Spurs were certain that Kane would sign a new contract, but as the season went on, they grew more anxious about how the Bundesliga champions were courting Kane.
Kane established an internal deadline for Bayern Munich to reach a transfer agreement with Tottenham after a year-long search, saying that if he was still at Spurs when the 2023–24 season began, he would remain there for the entire year.
On August 10, Bayern Munich and Tottenham finally reached an agreement, and the transaction was finalised two days later with Kane signing a four-year contract in Bavaria.
The fee was reportedly agreed to be an initial £86.4 million (€100 million) plus add-ons, although Hoeness has argued that the real sum is less than has been widely reported.
In a BR24 interview, Hoeness stated, “We only spent €95m.”
With Bayern Munich, Kane has had a fantastic start, scoring nine goals and dishing out five assists in ten games across all competitions.
When Bayern was defeated 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup on his professional debut, he was denied winning his first trophy.
Conversely, Tottenham has thrived without Kane. Spurs are now in first place in the Premier League under the new management of Ange Postecoglou after an undefeated start to the season.
