At the 2023 US Open, Djokovic achieved a record-tying 24th Grand Slam victory, overtaking Serena Williams to become the player with the most Major titles in the Open Era. He also increased his lead over Roger Federer, who retired with 20 Grand Slam titles, and Rafael Nadal, who has 22.
In response to queries from tennis enthusiasts on the ‘Monday Match Analysis’ podcast, Gross stated that, in contrast to Federer or Nadal, historical greats like Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, and Pete Sampras had a stronger case to contest the Serb’s GOAT status.
Gross stated that it was important to recognize that athletic longevity was much lower in the past and that winning on all three surfaces was far more difficult in order to bolster his claim.
